About
Hello! My name is Dr Vipan Kumar, and I welcome you to my personal corner of the web. I currently serve as an Associate Professor and Dean at Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU), Raipur, where I also completed a tenure as the Registrar. My career has been driven by a passion for the intersection of corporate law and taxation, a journey that has allowed me to wear the hats of both a dedicated academic and a practicing legal professional.
My academic foundation is built upon a Ph.D. in Law with a specialization in Corporate Taxation, alongside an LL.M. in Business Laws. I am also a dual-qualified professional, having been admitted as a Solicitor in England and Wales, UK. This international perspective has been vital in my approach to teaching and research, helping me bridge the gap between Indian legal frameworks and global standards.
Before fully immersing myself in the world of academia, I spent four years on the front lines of tax litigation. During this time, I appeared before various authorities, from the Commissioner (Appeals) all the way to the Supreme Court of India. One of my most significant professional milestones was representing Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) before tax authorities, a role through which I was able to save the institution more than 10 Crores in tax demands.
In the classroom, I have spent 14 years engaging with students on subjects like Corporate Restructuring, Corporate Finance, Corporate Governance, Taxation Law, and Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements,. My teaching philosophy extends beyond the lecture hall; I have supervised a considerable number of LL.M. dissertations and have been a guest faculty member at prestigious institutions like IIM (Raipur) and Prestige University (Indore), where I’ve taught the legal aspects of business to future business leaders.
Research is the heartbeat of my professional life. To date, I have authored or edited five books on topics such as Company Law, Sales of Goods Act and Negotiable Instruments, and I have published peer-reviewed research papers. My work often explores contemporary challenges, such as the impact of AI on investment, gender diversity on corporate boards, and the evolution of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. I have also had the honor of contributing to significant policy documents, including the World Bank’s “Ease of Doing Business” report and reports for the State Planning Commission of Chhattisgarh.
Beyond my primary roles, I stay active as a resource person for organizations like SEBI and have presented papers at international and national conferences. Whether I am helping a startup navigate taxation or discussing the future of cryptocurrency, my goal is always to make the law accessible and impactful.
To me, the law is much like a compass for a ship in a storm; it doesn’t stop the waves from coming, but it provides the essential direction needed to navigate through complex corporate and social waters safely and ethically.
